5 best benjamin moore white paint colors of all-time

WALLS, CABINETS, TRIMS: THESE POPULAR WHITES HAVE YOU COVERED

If you’ve been looking for that perfect white paint colour for your walls, trims or kitchen cabinets, I’m sure you’ll agree when I say that white is a force to be reckoned with. If you’re not at that point yet, once you have 20 different shades of white slapped on your walls, are elbow-deep in a wine bottle and are ready to toss said bottle at the wall, I’m sure you’ll jump on board the crazy train!

So, I’m here to de-mystify whites for you. That doesn’t mean you’ll know exactly which white is best for your room and its particular needs (reading this can help), but it will help you figure out which whites you DON’T want based on their undertones.

Above all else, here’s the most important thing to know – white is THE most reflective colour. What does this mean to you? It means that white LOVES to mess with you. It will take colours from its surroundings and flash them on the walls – giving you a colour that you maaaaybe hadn’t bargained on, for example:

if you have a lot of green/trees/grass outside your window, one or more of your walls might look slightly green

with northern exposure, your walls might look more gray-blue toned

If you have southern exposure, your walls might look softer and warmer, even creamy

furniture that’s a particular ‘colour’ (ie: red/blue/green/etc…) can reflect onto your walls

warm-toned bulbs will make your white will look warmer (picking the best KELVINS for your paint colour)

And THEN it will all change at night when the sun goes down. Really? Yup, and the ONLY thing you can do is make the best-educated decision you can based on what you learn here.

So, I’ve chosen sample blobs (super technical term) to give you a general idea of what you can expect to see. Remember, these are just computerized blobs, so don’t get yer’ knickers in a knot if a colour looks too colourful/yellow/gray/blue/etc…instead, hop into your local Benjamin Moore store to see the samples in REAL-life.

When should I use Pale Oak?

Use Pale Oak in similar settings with North facing light, warm wood finishes, and when you have crisp whites and matching stone or quartz countertops. It also can look fabulous in houses with very earthy Tuscan tile and granite countertops with taupe undertones. It also looks fabulous with bright South-facing light.

This house was one of our online consults, and it turned out beautifully! We paired it with BM White Dove trim and ceilings because she had really earthy tile on her kitchen floor.

White Heron (OC-57) by Benjamin Moore

White Heron – LRV: 86.69 (LRV, or Light Reflectance Value is a scale commonly used by design professionals where 0 = absolute black and 100 is pure white.)

Also known as Benjamin Moore – Oxford White (869, CC-30)

White Heron is Benjamin Moore’s second most popular cool white paint color! With a LRV of 86.69, it’s bright, but not too bright.

This paint color has green undertones. Depending on the lighting, and the other colors in your home, the green could be very subtle, or quite noticeable.

If you’re looking for something light, bright and slightly cool, then White Heron definitely needs to be on your list of colors to try out!

Grab a sample of White Heron here, and I recommend also testing Chantilly Lace – it’s a similar cool white paint color, just a little bit brighter with less undertones.

3. Cloud White (OC-130) by Benjamin Moore

Cloud White – LRV: 85.05 (LRV, or Light Reflectance Value is a scale commonly used by design professionals where 0 = absolute black and 100 is pure white.)

Also known as Benjamin Moore – 967, CC-40

Cloud White by Benjamin Moore is a warm white paint color, and it’s very similar to Benjamin Moore White Dove. They both have a similar warm, creamy white profile with yellow undertones.

Of the two paint colors, Cloud White is a shade lighter (LRV of 85.05 vs 83.16).

BENJAMIN MOORE SWISS COFFEE OC-45

LRV 81.91 (PREVIOUSLY 83.93) (learn more)

Swiss Coffee is a popular white paint colour, due in part to Studio McGee using it in their own home – but this doesn’t mean it’s best for YOURS. Swiss Coffee is very comparable to White Dove, not just in LRV, but in a general approach. HOWEVER, the difference between the two is that Swiss Coffee is slightly more likely to pick up a wee tiny touch of green.

THE BEST ROOMS FOR SWISS COFFEE

Swiss Coffee’s passive warmth makes it a great choice for any exposure, knowing that it WILL look that bit warmer in southern light and flatter in northern light (as will any warm white)

WHERE NOT TO USE SWISS COFFEE

I would be less inclined to partner Swiss Coffee with finishes that have a pink or taupe undertone, as I would worry about the undertones bouncing off each other a bit
if I have a choice, I’ll choose White Dove over Swiss Coffee EVERY TIME – I find it more predictable

Neutral White Paint Colors

Neutral paint colors are ones that have little to no undertones, or grayish undertones.

If a white paint has almost no gray in it, we call it a clean white. This type of white will look very bright.

If a white paint has some gray in it, it can still be a very neutral white paint color (because the gray may not lean warm or cool), but it will be more of a dull white.

A neutral white will be pretty neutral in any lighting.

While they won’t work to your advantage like a warm white will in cool light or a cool white will in north light, they will perform just how you think they should.

Chantilly Lace (OC-65)

Chantilly Lace is highly regarded by designers and homeowners alike.

It is one of Benjamin Moore’s most popular white paint colors, and also one of their brightest. It has an LRV of 92 – which means that it is just about their purest white.

Chantilly Lace doesn’t have any strong undertones, so I classify it as a neutral white.

But, when you look at Chantilly Lace, it almost, just almost, looks warm.

It has a bit of a creamy look to it, even though it is not creamy at all.

I love Chantilly Lace most for trim, built ins and cabinets, because it gives that gorgeous bright white look without appearing chilly.

Super White (OC-152)

Super White is a striking white paint color that is neither cool or warm. It is crisp, clean and, as the name implies, super white.

Super White has no obvious undertones, and is Benjamin Moore’s whitest white paint color.

It is great for cabinets, trim, doors, and can even be used on the walls of a room, if you want a purely white space.

BENJAMIN MOORE CHANTILLY LACE OC-65

LRV 90.04 (PREVIOUSLY 92.2) (learn more)

Chantilly Lace is a lovely white that’s one of the WHITEST white paint colours (it’s only beaten by two others!). It has no noticeable undertone, making it neither warm nor cool, which also means it’s SUPER susceptible to responding to the colours in its environment.

Chantilly Lace is a simple, clean choice if you’re looking to use white. It can be a bit chilly for a north-facing room as it will reflect some of that cool gray-blue look, however, in a south-facing room, it can have a beautiful soft warmth to it. It’s often referred to as the best ‘whitest white’ paint colour.

Chantilly Lace is a great white for a super hot sun like you’d find in Hawaii as the sun will warm up your white considerably!

If your trim and baseboards ‘seem’ to be white (but you don’t know what colour they actually are) Chantilly Lace might be a good match. There’s also Benjamin Moore White OC 151 which is just slightly grayed-out compared to Super White, but still pretty damn white.

THE BEST ROOMS FOR CHANTILLY LACE

Rooms where you want a fresh white paint colour that acts like white without being icy cold (although it could look this way in cold northern exposure).

It’s HUGELY flexible with a WIDE variety of paint colours, so if you have rooms in multiple colours, this could be your white paint colour.

WHEN TO AVOID CHANTILLY LACE

If you’re looking for a soft warm white, this isn’t it, unless you look at it in the late afternoon in western sunshine.

BENJAMIN MOORE BALBOA MIST OC-27

Balboa Mist is kind of like a lighter, softer version of Collingwood. It’s also slightly more likely to pick up a very weee wink o’ pink in its purple undertone.

Super White is very subtly cool white. But even with this slightly cool vibe, the overall look is simple, clean and great for modern spaces.

THE BEST ROOMS FOR SUPER WHITE

If you have a south-facing light, Super White is a great way to balance the warm light without tipping TOO yellow (as it will pick up some of the sun’s warmth).

Rooms with warm western afternoon sunshine also suit the slightly cool approach of Super White, just make sure you like how it looks in the morning hours too!

WHERE NOT TO USE SUPER WHITE

If you want a stark bright white. The slightly lower LRV of Super White makes it softer than some others, but the cool tone helps it look white and crisp, but there are BRIGHTER whites.

With any surface or finish even REMOTELY related to a warm Tuscan style.

Swiss Coffee (OC-45) by Benjamin Moore

How I First Discovered the Challenges of White Paint

A few ago, I painted my bathroom Eider White. It was a popular white color at the time, without really looking at it or thinking about it much, I bought a can and put it on the walls.

Initially, I was pretty pleased. The walls were covered in 90s wallpaper prior to painting them Eider White, so it was a big upgrade.

But after a few days, I started to notice that my grayish white walls, ALSO had a strong purple undertone.

And before long, all I could see was that purple undertone on the walls. I would try to tell myself that it was just a grayish off-white, but there was no denying it.

Those walls looked purple.

So choosing a white paint is actually much harder than you think it would be.

To help you out, here is a list of the top white paint colors from Benjamin Moore.

It includes the most versatile, most popular and most usable white paint colors, so you don’t have to spend hours at the paint store wondering whether a white paint will actually look white in your home.

Our Go-To Painting Supplies

Paint brushes – I recommend ‘Pro Grade’ paint brushes, they’re the perfect budget friendly option. This set comes with both flat and angled brushes to get every nook and cranny. I LOVE the quality and, in my experience, they’re much more affordable from Amazon compared to in-store prices. You might be surprised how cheap this professional quality 5 Brush Set is on Amazon (it’s less than $10!).
Paint rollers – Cover more surface area with a handy roller.

It’s an excellent quality sprayer, and powers through any painting projects in a hurry. Painting with an airless sprayer makes it easy to complete projects in much less time.

Drop cloth – Skip the mess and grab a reusable drop cloth instead. This will come in handy for future projects. Just pop it in the washing machine after you’re done painting and it will be ready to go for the next project.
Multi-surface painter’s tape – I always use this brand of painter’s tape, it’s great for smooth or lightly textured walls, trim, baseboards, tile, or even glass. It sticks quick and is easy to remove.
Sanding sponges – For smoothing and prepping surfaces, you’ll need a couple of sanding sponges in different grits.

What are the Best Trim and Ceiling Colors For Pale Oak?

I prefer to use this paint color with clean or bright off-whites such as Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace, BM Oxford White, or SW Pure White. I also like BM White Dove with Pale Oak, especially if the tile and other hard finishes are very earthy. Blue-whites such as SW Extra White or BM Decorator’s White are ok but not my first choice because they can look harsh, but they can work. Warmer off-whites and creams such as BM Swiss Coffee won’t have enough contrast to bring this color to light. Whites with strong yellow undertones such as BM Simply White or BM Snowfall White are not my favorites with this color because the yellow can look funky with this undertone.

This bedroom had RED Tuscan walls before we painted it. Pale Oak is soft, harmonious, and lovely here!

White Dove is a soft, warm white paint colour. It has a warm creamy yellow undertone that’s WELL grounded with a neutral base to calm it down. While some don’t love the bit of yellow in White Dove, most find it acts like a passive warmth, not an actual ‘colour’.

White Dove accommodates many different paint colours because while it’s a warm white, it has a slight neutral base bringing the warmth down. It doesn’t come off as creamy and warm as Cloud White, but also isn’t as clean as Chantilly Lace (both coming shortly). White Dove is a soft white, so it won’t act like white, but a softer warmer version of it.

THE BEST ROOMS FOR WHITE DOVE

No matter what your exposure is, White Dove is a great option, knowing that it WILL look a bit warmer in southern light and flatter in northern light (as will any warm white).

It’s a starting place for homes with warmer cream, beige or tan finishes (meaning you wouldn’t want a WHITER white).

WHERE NOT TO USE WHITE DOVE

White Dove only acts like a TRUE white when it’s not compared to a LEGIT bright white and is in the right lighting conditions.

Compared with Chelsea Gray, Metropolis is very similar in depth (Chelsea Gray is only a tiny wink darker). Where you’ll see the BIG difference between these two dark shades of gray is in their undertones. Chelsea Gray caters to a very mild green; Metropolis caters to a violet undertone.

And while both are warm grays, Metropolis is likelier to pass as a taupe/warm gray, whereas Chelsea Gray is most definitely GRAY. Of the two, I suggest Metropolis 10x more than Chelsea Gray for my Online Paint Color Consulting as it tends to suit more projects.

WHY IS METROPOLIS A POPULAR SHADE OF GRAY

Putting green next to Metropolis will bring out the purple undertones, so be cautious if that isn’t the look you’re going for.

While Metropolis is a warm gray at heart, it’s warm enough that, in some cases, it looks more like a dark taupe.

Every gray has undertones, and it’s important to find the one that best suits your surfaces. The violet undertone of Metropolis tends to suit more interior finishes.

BENJAMIN MOORE CHELSEA GRAY HC-168

Chelsea Gray is an AWESOME medium-toned gray. Not too light, not too dark…juuuust right. Chelsea Gray contains only a wink of undertone – green, but it can be VERY vague. And believe it or not, it’s actually a WARM gray, but you’ll hardly know it unless you compare it directly to cooler gray paint colors.

Chelsea Gray is a beautiful choice for kitchen cabinets, as long as your countertop/flooring can humor that vague green undertone.

WHY IS CHELSEA GRAY A POPULAR DARK GRAY PAINT COLOR?

Whether it’s a small or large bedroom, Chelsea Gray is neither overwhelming nor underwhelming as long as you are comfortable with some depth.

Chelsea Gray is fantastic as an exterior color, particularly on the body of the house.

Great for cabinets and furniture.

Chelsea Gray has an LRV of 23 – it will absorb light and look quite heavy in a room without adequate lighting.

Chantilly Lace is a light & bright white paint color with minimal undertones and a slightly cool cast.

It’s an excellent room-brightening paint for any room with limited natural natural lighting. Coming in at #2 on this list, it’s an extremely popular Benjamin Moore interior paint color.

Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace is one of my absolute favorite white paint colors. In our latest renovation project, we chose Chantilly Lace as a whole-home color, and used it for walls, ceilings, and trim.

Which Colors Look Best with Pale Oak?

Taupes look fabulous with blues of any shade. Pair Pale Oak with saturated blues, blue-grays and saturated greens.

Here is Pale Oak on the walls with BM Mount Saint Anne as an accent wall. It looks so good! And that stained glass window is so pretty. This is the home of a very close friend of mine! We used BM Oxford White for the trim and ceiling color.
